Today was a typical first day off trail. We relaxed, stressed, worked, rested, and played. We tried sleeping in, but both Pickles and I were wide awake by 6am, hungry and ready to start our day.

Staying at this little Hyatt Place in Reno is such a treat. The room is spacious and clean, the staff have gone out of their way for us, and their all-you-can-eat included breakfast is exactly what we dreamed about on trail.

After eating a huge breakfast, Pickles, Mama Bear, and I settled in for some planning and preparations. Before we began the PCT we only bought food and packaged rations for the first half of the hike, all the way to Reno, where we planned on doing it all over again with all our newfound knowledge and experience. It was hard to believe that that time had already arrived, but sure enough, we spent all morning planning numbers of days and meals, and all afternoon shopping at Winco for our groceries. It was a huge undertaking, and by the time 4pm rolled around we were all pretty beat. Unbelievably, Pickles had squeezed in a run in the hotel gym in the morning, and we had In-N-Out for lunch, so the whole day wasn’t spent on rations, but just about.

We decided that rather than spend the whole rest of the day counting, packaging, and dividing up food, we’d take a break and get back to the project tomorrow morning. We made plans with our friends here in Reno to grab all-you-can-eat sushi at one of our favorite restaurants, but first, we stopped by my friend Cassie’s house so I could show Mama Bear my wedding dress which she had yet to see in person.

There was a great showing at sushi and we had a wonderfully fun evening hanging out with friends and getting caught up on life in the “real world”. It helped take our minds off everything we have to get done, and just enjoy being our healthy, happy selves. This was only the start of many social events coming up this weekend, so once we get our work done, we have a lot of fun to look forward to.
